Can I contact the new companies I find?

    1 min read

Contacting a new company for business reasons is often lawful in the UK, but the rules depend on the channel and on who you are contacting. NewcoHunter shows you public company information. How you use it for outreach is your responsibility.

Three questions that decide the rules

    1. Which channel? Email and text, live calls and post are covered by different rules.
    2. Who is the recipient? A limited company is a "corporate subscriber". A sole trader and some partnerships are treated like individuals for email and text.
    3. Are you using a named person's details? If so, UK GDPR applies as well, because a named director is an identifiable individual.

    The short version by channel

    • Email and text: see email and PECR.
    • Live calls: see TPS and CTPS screening.
    • Post: see direct mail.
    • Personal data of directors: see UK GDPR and directors.
    • What every channel has in common

      • Say who you are and give an easy way to opt out or tell you to stop.
      • Keep a suppression list of people and companies who have said no, and check it before every campaign.
      • Only contact people about things relevant to their business, and keep a record of why you thought it was appropriate.
      • Do not use deceptive subject lines or hide your identity.

      What NewcoHunter shows you

Every company has a registered address and named directors from the public register. New companies rarely have a website, email or phone number, and we only show contact details we have verified belong to the company. Our contact details article explains more. Most new-company outreach therefore starts by post.
